Adsense will only return you the maximum benefits if you design them appropriately for your usage. This includes not only the content of the ads but where and how you place them as well as the design and layout of the ad unit. The object is to guide an increasingly number of visitors to your page and the ads you have placed therein. Google does not allow statements or other overt act that request a visitor to click the ads. They, in fact, must be displayed as advertisements and only as advertisements. Therefore their looks and contents are necessary to gain clicks.
One of the most important custom features you have at your disposal is the shape of your ads. Google offers many formats including skyscrapers, single ad blocks and banners the size of each should be selected to conform to your page design. Inclusive here is the size of the Adsense ads. Select these to CONFORM to the layout of your page. Just as you designed your web page contents to be attractive you should choose the size and shape of the ads to complement this attractiveness. Why chase away visitors with glaring and ugly ad units when they are easily implemented in you design. Many many many (did I say many?) studies have proven that the best performing shape is the large rectangle, results that should guide you in placement and design of your ads.
Then we need to say a bit about color. Ad color is definitely high on the list when incorporating ads into your page. Google has been nice enough (actually business minded since if YOU do not make money with your adsense campaigns than naturally THEY make no money. And is not the dollar why we are all on the adsense kick? Obviously the colors used should compliment your website design. Whether you choose to blend the ads or design them to stand out the colors should always increase the beauty of your site lest you chase visitors away. After all they are on your site to glean information not to be hit in the eyeballs with a glaring ad!
You are going to choose colors for borders, title, text and the link URL. And or course you have the option of a background color, which usually should be the same as your website page. It has been shown that blue is a great color for the link—after all how many surfers are out there that do not know that blue means “click me”? As for borders, they should not exist. Without the border the ad will easily blend into your page creating an easily read design. However, do not attempt to make the ad “disappear” into your site as there are probably fewer than ONE person using the internet that do not know a Google ad when they see one. Your goal is to deliver an attractive page for the ad and it is Google’s job to get you ads that will attract clicks. That done and money flows into the pockets of all!
Lastly, but in no way least!, we can talk a bit about the positioning of your ads. If your page layout permits it you should consider the larger size ads (as discussed previously) as they help increase the number of ad impressions you get in a day. However if your layout does not permit the larger ads then you need to strike a balance between your content and the ad. Certainly it is not in your best monetary interest to overpower the visitor and imply that your content is secondary in quality to the Google ads you are exposing them to. Your goal is to place them so they have an “in-place” look to them and adds value to the content.
Shape, color and size. At times a bit disconcerting when starting out but as you work you will develop a feel for what “fits” with your website. Then your only problem is getting enough websites, pages and ads out there to attract a SUBSTANTIAL number of visitors and then you can watch your adsense balance grow and grow!
